ABOUT THE TOOLKIT

Our toolkit for Service Dog Organizations informs service dog trainers about recovery from substance use problems and the important role of peer support and connection for the wellness of their Veteran dog handlers diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  This toolkit includes:

  • an online certificate course and
  • access to substance use recovery and peer support resources.

This project initiated in 2016  as a research partnership between the University of Saskatchewan and a service dog organization in Canada. The project team includes over 30 individuals from universities across Canada, the veteran community, service dog organizations and trainers,  and guidance from Indigenous Elders and working alongside service dogs.

COURSE Reviews

I Connected for Veteran Wellness

“Connecting for Veteran Wellness isn’t just a course for people that train service dogs. I don’t know many Veterans, but I know many people with PTSD. I don’t know many people that have a trained service dog, but I know many people who’s lives have been impacted by substance use. This is when I saw that I needed this course, not out of interest, but out of necessity. I have some views on addictions and the journey of recovery that are outdated. I learned new language, I gained insight, and I felt for people who struggled with addiction. I hoped I was going to be able to meet them where they needed me to, not where I thought they should be.”
